Ladies
stiletto shoes feature a long thin metal heel named after the stiletto
dagger. They come in different lengths ranging from 1 inch to 8 inches.
A heel that is less than half an inch is called a kitten heel.
Ladies stiletto shoes became popular in the 1950s. Before that wood or other material was required for any heel and the heel therefore had to be wider. The introduction of technology that utilized a supporting metal shaft made the stiletto heel a fashion statement in the 1950s.
During the 20th century ladies stiletto shoes were known for their erotic nature. They flattered women's bust line and rear end. In addition, the metal became associated with the new aesthetic that coincided with the new freedoms women gained.
